Research shows that Tasmanians generate over 900,000 tonnes of waste each year. Up until recently, landfill has been a convenient and efficient way of dealing with waste and keeping our communities and environment clean. Modern landfill practise and regulation has meant they are now better managed to limit the release of harmful greenhouse gases and other environmental risks like water contamination.
That said, landfills have limited space and there is an increasing cost for waste going to landfill.
The good news is there is an increasing range of solutions for most of the waste we create today. As these solutions continue to grow we will be able to use landfills less.

This bin is then collected as part of the fortnightly waste collection service and taken to the Dulverton Waste Management’s award winning landfill where the waste is essentially stored in a precision-engineered structure. This structure is designed to protect the environment from pollutants and is managed under strict regulations.
